OUR AREA OF FOCUS

Climate Change Advocacy:

Kenya faces climate challenges like droughts, erratic rainfall, and rising temperatures. Advocacy should focus on sustainable agriculture, climate adaptation, renewable energy, biodiversity conservation, and policy reforms to ensure resilience and development. The following are areas of focus in Kimajani Green Afrique;

01

Peace, Climate Governance and Policy Advocacy

Climate change in Kenya worsens resource conflicts, particularly in the northern regions and Rift Valley, where pastoralists compete for water and grazing land. Kimajani Green Afrique promotes dialogue and sustainable resource management to reduce tensions. Women are disproportionately impacted, with displacement from droughts or floods increasing gender-based violence (GBV) risks. Kimajani Green Afrique empowers women through education, economic opportunities, and inclusion in climate decision-making. Although Kenya's Climate Change Act (2016) offers a strong framework, implementation gaps persist. Kimajani Green Afrique advocates for better enforcement, increased funding for climate adaptation, and community-driven solutions to strengthen environmental conservation and resilience

02

Afforestation, Reforestation, and Nature Conservation Afforestation and Reforestation:

Kimajani Green Afrique is dedicated to restoring Cherangani Forest to combat deforestation and help Kenya reach its goal of 10% forest cover by 2030. This is essential for preserving biodiversity, combating climate change, and supporting local communities. The organization also focuses on protecting critical ecosystems like Mau Forest and Mount Kenya, vital water sources for the country. Promoting eco-tourism offers a sustainable approach to curbing deforestation while boosting economic growth. Inspired by Wangari Maathai's Green Belt Movement, Kimajani Green Afrique emphasizes community involvement, especially empowering women, youth, and people with disabilities (PWDs) in tree planting and environmental conservation. These efforts contribute to long-term sustainability, benefiting both the environment and Kenya’s socio-economic development.

03

Smart Agriculture and Agroforestry

Kenya, where 70% of the population relies on agriculture, Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) is a game-changer in addressing climate change and food insecurity. CSA encourages drought-resistant crops, efficient irrigation, and crop diversification. Agroforestry, which integrates trees with farming, boosts soil health, reduces erosion, and provides extra income through fruits and timber. With many youth leaning toward office jobs, organizations like Kimajani Green Afrique and government bodies are inspiring them to embrace farming. By offering training, access to resilient seeds, and better market opportunities, these efforts aim to enhance productivity, ensure food security, and create sustainable farming futures

04

Social Support / Health Empowerment

Social Safety Nets: Vulnerable communities, such as those in arid and semi-arid regions like Turkana and Garissa, require targeted interventions to improve access to water, food, and shelter. Health Empowerment: Climate change has led to an increase in diseases such as malaria and cholera (several hundred reported last year in Tana River- vulnerable groups affected)due to rising temperatures and water contamination. Advocacy focuses on improving healthcare infrastructure, promoting awareness, and addressing climate-sensitive diseases. Disaster Preparedness: Floods and droughts are common in Kenya. Advocates push for better disaster preparedness through early warning systems, emergency response training, and community resilience programs.

05

Research and Development (R&D)

Kimajani Green Afrique's advocacy in Research and Development (R&D) focuses on creating local solutions to climate challenges, such as developing salt-tolerant crops for coastal areas and solar-powered irrigation for dry regions, with support from relevant government bodies. The organization highlights the importance of accurate climate data for effective planning and works to improve meteorological systems to ensure accessibility for farmers and policymakers. As Kenya leads in renewable energy, particularly geothermal and wind, Kimajani encourages expanding clean energy access in rural areas to reduce reliance on wood fuel. Additionally, Kimajani supports youth-led innovation hubs for solutions like clean cooking and waste recycling, fostering long-term climate resilience.

Conclusion

In Kenya, climate change advocacy needs to tackle both short-term and long-term challenges in a sustainable and inclusive way. Kimajani believes that combining peacebuilding, nature conservation, smart agriculture, social support, and research can help the country become more resilient to climate change while protecting its biodiversity. Achieving these goals requires collaboration between the government, civil society, the private sector, and local communities
